PLIDA CERTIFICATE

PLIDA (Italian Language Project Dante Alighieri) is one of the four certifications of Italian as a Foreign Language officially recognized by the Italian Ministry Of Foreign Affairs (under the Convention n. 1903 of 4.11.1993) and the Sapienza University in Rome (Convention of 29.6.2004). PLIDA is also recognized by the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy (adm. order 18.10.2002) and the Ministry of University and Research as a qualification that facilitates the enrollment of foreign students (protocol n. 1906 del 9.10.2006 ). The PLIDA certificate is therefore a preferential qualification for enrollment of foreign students in Italian Universities. A certificate of level B1 is necessary to obtain Italian citizenship.

The PLIDA exam is designed for people whose mother tongue is not Italian who wish to evaluate their proficiency in the Italian language and see their language skills officially recognized. It operates on a 6-level structure starting from the A1 level, which certifies the ability to use Italian in common everyday situations, up to the C2 level, which certifies language skills comparable to those of a educated native speaker and applies to all professional situations, including very complex and sophisticated ones.

Candidates may choose to take an exam at the level they feel is closest to their proficiency. Registration for an advanced level does not require having taken the lower level exams. Candidates can also register for multiple levels in the same session.

6 LEVELS OF PROFICIENCY OF THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE

(CEFR = Common European Framework for Languages)

ITALIAN FOR STARTERS PLIDA A1 = A1 CEFR (breakthrough level)
PLIDA A2 = A2 CEFR (elementary level)
BASIC ITALIAN PLIDA B1 = B1 CEFR (threshold level)
PLIDA B2 = B2 CEFR (vantage level)
PROFESSIONAL ITALIAN PLIDA C1 = C1 CEFR (effective operational level)
PLIDA C2 = C2 CEFR (mastery level)

Level of proficiency represented by each PLIDA level:

A1: the ability to use familiar everyday expressions aimed at the satisfaction of pragmatic needs and to ask and answer questions about personal details. At this level of competence, interaction with Italian speakers can take place provided the other person is prepared to help.

A2: the ability to communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring an exchange of information on areas of most immediate relevance, such as personal topics, shopping, local geography and so on.

B1: the ability to understand written and spoken texts on familiar topics. At this level, one is able to engage effectively in a conversation as a tourist, to express opinions and to give simple explanations.

B2: the competence in the language which is necessary in a traditional educational context (for enrollment in school or university) or non-formal training (e.g. professional courses and internships), as well as to prepare for work activities that involve interaction with the public (e.g. in the commercial sector). At this level, one can socialize and interact with Italian speakers fluently and spontaneously and use the language for work-related activities in one’s field.

C1: a strong confidence with the Italian language and culture, such that it can be used in complex work environments (in the commercial, industrial and administrative sectors). At this level one can understand and produce complex, longer texts and recognize implicit meanings in written texts such as literary works.

C2: a high linguistic competence comparable to that of an educated Italian native speaker and which can be applied in any and all professional settings. It is the level required to teach Italian as a foreign language and to qualify for professional assignments of a high degree.
